Taos Valley Overlook Project Plan and Orilla Verde Recreation Area Management Plan Amendment

The Bureau of Land Management in Taos, New Mexico, has been in the planning process and soliciting feedback to guide future recreation use of the (Klauer property) Taos Valley Overlook parcel south of Taos.

In the document, there is an environmental analysis on proposals for:

  • trailhead access points to the Overlook,
  • a non-motorized trail system on the Overlook,
  • an interpretation program for natural and cultural history, and
  • improvements to facilities at Taos Junction Bridge and the Rio Grande/Rio Pueblo Confluence.

Proposals also include prescriptions recommending the appropriate mix of management, marketing, facilities, and services to meet certain recreation experiences. The Taos Valley Overlook has been incorporated into the Orilla Verde Recreation Area. We propose that it come under the same regulations which include closure to use of firearms. We are working with New Mexico Department of Game & Fish to extend the proclamation that will close it to hunting as well.

  Taos Bypass

The Taos bypass has existed in many forms from pure fantasy to harsh reality for the past 30 years. It now seems that it is closer to becoming a harsh reality and it's going right through our neighborhood.

The New Mexico Depart of Transportation (NMDOT) has been holding a series of public "Stakeholder (that's us) Working Group" meetings at the Taos Convention Center. These meetings have been held for quite some time now without much notice from our end of the bypass. However, now is the time to get involved.

Discussions about various routes are becoming more specific as to route and dates.

It is important that we educate ourselves on the impact this bypass will have on our environment, lifestyle, and property values.

Here is a list of some of the documents generated from past meetings. It is by no means comprehensive though an effort is being made to gather gocuments from all past meetings. Please visit this page often to check on updates, both past and current:

Because the County Commission voted to place the JC/JC in our neighborhood, we are launching an aggressive campaign to fight funding for the project. This funding will come in the form of an increase in the county's Gross Receipts Tax (GRT). GRT is the same thing as sales tax.

A county-wide referendum will be held in March, 2006 to vote on the issue.

The LRPNA needs as much help as possible to fight this referendum. Please contact any board member to offer your services in any way you can. Please read the minutes of our last informal meeting (09/08/05). They contain some ideas of the campaign we are working on to fight this.

The bottom line is that if the GRT referendum is not passed, the JC/JC will not be built.
